The backup battery is intended to back up the data memory (SRAM) inside of the CPU. While the system is turned on, the power is supplied from the control power supply so that the battery is not consumed.
Note, however, that the battery should be replaced with a new one when replacement time comes, even if a battery error is not displayed.
